Our Concrete Driveway Installation Process, No Shortcuts
Step 1 — Free On-Site Assessment
We visit your property, assess site conditions — soil type, drainage, grade, access, existing driveway state and give you a detailed, fixed quote. We’ll also advise on City of Toronto permit requirements specific to your property.
Step 2 — Permits
The City of Toronto requires a permit for any new driveway installation that changes the existing footprint, widens the driveway, or connects to a City road allowance. Step 3 — Demolition and Removal
We break up and fully remove the existing surface and dispose of all debris. At this stage we inspect the base layer, any drainage or soil issues are identified and addressed now, before they become expensive problems later.
Step 4 — Base Preparation
This is the most critical step in the entire job. We install 4–6 inches of compacted granular base — gravel or stone screenings, to create a stable, frost-resistant foundation. A solid base is what separates a concrete driveway that lasts 40 years from one that cracks in 5. We never skip this step or cut it short.
Step 5 — Forming, Reinforcement and Control Joints
We set forms to define the driveway shape and edges. Wire mesh or rebar is placed based on driveway size and vehicle load. Control joints are cut or formed every 8–12 feet, these allow controlled expansion and contraction and prevent random cracking through the slab.
Step 6 — Pour and Finishing
We pour to a minimum 6-inch thickness for all residential driveways, the correct standard for Toronto’s frost depth and load requirements. The surface is finished to your specification. We work efficiently to ensure a consistent, cold-joint-free pour on every project.
Step 7 — Curing and Sealing
A curing compound is applied immediately after finishing to lock in moisture and ensure full strength development. After the 28-day full cure, the surface is sealed to protect against road salt, staining, and water infiltration.
