Concrete overlays · Toronto and the GTA
Cracked, worn or dated concrete? A new surface, bonded over what you already have.
Toronto Concrete Repairs applies polymer modified overlays over driveways, porches, steps, patios, pool decks, garage and interior floors across Toronto and the GTA. Broom, knockdown, stamped or smooth, in one to two days, for a fraction of replacement.
Quick answer
A concrete overlay is a thin layer of polymer modified concrete, usually 3 to 10 mm, bonded directly over your existing slab. It covers cracks, pitting, staining and worn surfaces and gives you a new finish in the texture and colour you choose, without the cost or disruption of tearing the old concrete out. Toronto Concrete Repairs installs overlays on porches, steps, driveways, walkways, patios, pool decks, garage and interior floors across Toronto and the GTA, typically at $7 to $10 per square foot. An overlay needs a sound slab underneath. When the base has failed, we say so and price replacement alongside it.
Start here
An overlay only lasts if the slab underneath is solid. That's the whole test, and we check it before we quote.
Right column? We quote replacement honestly instead. Borderline? Repair first, then overlay, is often the answer. Text three photos and we'll tell you which.
Where we apply them

Built for tires, salt and freeze and thaw. Broom finished for grip, sealed against winter.

Slip resistant, weatherproof, and finished to match the house instead of the old grey slab.

Our most common overlay. Broom finish or natural concrete look, edges rebuilt first.

Knockdown or smooth textures that stay cool underfoot and grip when wet.

Smooth, modern floors for basements, offices and retail, over the slab you already have.

Pitting and spalling levelled, then a tough, chemical resistant surface over top.

The process
Most overlay failures come from skipped prep. The overlay peels or the cracks come back through, and the homeowner pays twice. Here's what we do on every job.
Photos or a site visit to confirm the concrete is sound and not moving. If it isn't, we tell you and quote the alternative.
Diamond grinding opens the pores and removes sealers, paint, oil and loose material so the overlay has something to bond to.
Cracks opened and filled, spalled edges rebuilt, low spots levelled. The overlay goes over a repaired slab, not over the problems.
Bonding primer, then the polymer modified overlay in the finish you chose: broom, knockdown, stamped or smooth.
Sealed against salt, water and UV, with grip added for exterior surfaces. Cure times before foot and vehicle traffic are in your quote.
Why Toronto Concrete Repairs
We also repair and replace concrete, so we have no reason to sell you an overlay your slab can't hold.

This is the second project I've hired Toronto Concrete Repair to complete, and once again they did a phenomenal job in record time. They repaired the concrete on my front porch and steps and applied a decorative coating. Incredible work, it looks like a brand new porch.
★★★★★
We've had our front porch resurfaced and couldn't be happier with the process and amazing end result. They repaired the existing concrete cracks and refinished the stairs with high quality products. The crew was punctual, diligent and left the job site very clean each day.
★★★★☆
Our three concrete veranda steps needed a crack repaired and resurfacing on the backs and sides. Several other concrete companies would not consider the work as they deemed it too small a job. Toronto Concrete gave us a reasonable estimate and timeframe, came at the agreed time and completed the work in the agreed timeframe.
Questions
A concrete overlay typically costs $7 to $10 per square foot in Toronto and the GTA, depending on the condition of the slab, the amount of repair needed first and the finish you choose. Stamped and decorative finishes sit at the top of that range, broom finish at the bottom. Text three photos and you'll have a written quote, usually within one business day, with the price held 21 days.
An overlay is the right call for concrete that's cracked, spalled, stained or dated on the surface but solid underneath. It's the wrong call for concrete that's heaving, sinking, cracked clean through or crumbling, because the overlay can't fix what's happening below it. We assess that first, from photos or on site, and tell you honestly which you have.
Cost, usually 30 to 50 percent of a tear out and repour. Speed, one to two days instead of a week. No demolition, no bins, no bare dirt in front of the house. And choice of finish: stamped, knockdown, broom or smooth, in colours plain concrete can't give you. The trade off is that it only works on a sound slab, which is why we check that before quoting.
Porches, steps, walkways, driveways, patios, pool decks, balconies, basement and garage floors, entryways and interior slabs. Heavily damaged or uneven surfaces need repair and levelling first, which we include in the quote.
Properly installed on a sound slab, 15 to 20 years, with resealing every 3 to 5 years. Freeze and thaw is the biggest threat: water gets into an unsealed surface, freezes, expands and lifts the overlay. Keeping the sealer up is what makes the difference between 8 years and 20.
Only if it's finished smooth and left that way. For exterior work we broom finish or use a knockdown texture, and we add a grip additive to the sealer. That gives shoes and boots something to bite on without making the surface rough to look at.
Most residential overlays are one to two days on site, including prep. Cure times before foot and vehicle traffic depend on the product and the weather, and they're spelled out in your quote. Exterior overlays run from roughly April through November; interior floors carry on year round.
A walkthrough before we start to agree access and work areas, dust control and coverings while grinding, daily cleanup, and one contact who keeps you informed from the first day to the final walkthrough.
Every overlay carries a written three to five year warranty, with the terms in your quote before you sign. Our Graniflex coating system carries longer coverage if you want a waterproof, crack resistant finish instead.
Yes. Full liability insurance and WSIB coverage, certificates on request. Overlays don't normally need a permit. Where a job does, we have experience working within City of Toronto and GTA permit requirements and bylaws.
