What goes into a concrete patio that lasts in Toronto?
A Toronto patio fails from underneath, not on top. Clay soil, frost and water draining toward the house are what crack and sink most patios. A concrete patio built to last is excavated to solid ground, given a compacted granular base, formed with a slope away from the house, reinforced, poured with air entrained concrete made for freeze and thaw, and cut with control joints so any cracking happens where it's meant to. Most patios take two to four days on site, take foot traffic after a day or two, and furniture after about a week. Toronto Concrete Repairs builds them across the GTA from April through November, with a three year written warranty.

Shape
A simple rectangle against the house, an L around a corner, or curves around a garden bed. Concrete is formed on site, so the shape is yours.
Size
Big enough for the table and chairs you actually own, plus room to walk around them. We'll mark it out in your yard before anything is dug.
Additions
A walkway from the side gate, a step down from the back door, a pad for the barbecue or the shed, poured at the same time so it all matches.
Finish
Broom for grip, smooth trowel, stamped pattern, exposed aggregate, or a Graniflex or overlay finish on top. Details below.

How we build a concrete patio
The finish is what you see. These steps are why it stays level and crack free.
- Layout and quoteFrom photos or a visit: the patio marked out in your yard, finish and additions agreed, permit needs checked.
- Locates and protectionUtility locates booked before digging. Lawn, garden beds, fences and the house protected.
- ExcavationTopsoil and soft ground dug out to solid subgrade, and any old patio or pavers removed and hauled away.
- BaseGranular base placed and compacted in layers. On Toronto clay, this is what stops the patio sinking.
- Forms and slopeForms set so water runs away from the house and off the patio, never toward your foundation.
- ReinforceRebar or mesh placed for the size of the slab and anything heavy it will carry, like a hot tub or an outdoor kitchen.
- Pour and finishAir entrained concrete for freeze and thaw, finished to your choice, with control joints cut where cracks should go.
- Cure, seal, handoverProtected while it cures, sealed, then dates for furniture, care instructions and your written warranty.

Concrete patio construction: common questions
Most backyard patios take two to four days on site: excavation and base, forming and reinforcement, then the pour and finish. You can walk on it after a day or two, and put furniture and the barbecue back after about a week.
Concrete is one continuous slab, so there are no joints for weeds, ants or shifting stones, and it's easier to keep clean. Pavers can be lifted and relaid in spots. If you like the look of pavers, a stamped concrete or Graniflex finish gives a stone look on a single slab. Either one only lasts as long as the base underneath it.
All concrete shrinks as it cures, which is why we cut control joints: they decide where hairline cracks form, so they happen in a straight line in the joint rather than across the middle of the patio. A proper base, reinforcement and drainage are what prevent the structural cracking and sinking that ruin patios.
A ground level patio in a backyard usually doesn't need a building permit, but lot coverage, drainage toward neighbours and setbacks can matter, especially with steps, raised areas or anything attached to the house. We check during the quote and tell you if your design needs one.
Not as new concrete: a thin new slab over an old cracked one cracks the same way. If the old patio is level and solid, it can be resurfaced with a bonded overlay or Graniflex instead. If it has sunk or broken up, it comes out and a new patio goes in on a proper base.
Yes. A penetrating or film forming sealer protects against water, salt and stains and makes cleaning easier. We seal new patios after curing and recommend resealing every two to three years.
Yes, if it's designed for it. Tell us up front and the slab is thickened and reinforced where the hot tub, kitchen or fire feature will sit, with sleeves for gas, water or electrical run before the pour.
From roughly April through November, when temperatures stay above freezing through curing. Spring and early summer book up first, so quoting over the winter gets you an early spot.
A three year written warranty on new concrete, and ten years on Graniflex if you choose that finish. The terms are in your quote before you sign.
