Why Oakville concrete fails, and what we do about it
Oakville has more backyard pools per street than almost anywhere in the GTA, and most pool decks are poured concrete from the 1970s to 90s. They crack from the freeze and thaw, spall from pool chemicals and salt systems, and get slippery as the surface wears. The slab underneath is usually fine, so the answer is almost always repair and resurfacing rather than tearing it out: cracks filled, the deck resurfaced in a knockdown texture or coated in Graniflex, which is waterproof, crack resistant and carries a ten year warranty.
South of the QEW, the lake does the work. Old Oakville, Bronte, Eastlake and Morrison have 1950s and 60s porches and walkways that have taken sixty years of lake wind, salt and freeze and thaw. They spall at the edges but are sound underneath, and those are repaired and resurfaced in a day. Driveways here are often the original slab on little base, and when they've sunk at the garage they need replacing.
North of the QEW, it's builder concrete. Glen Abbey and River Oaks from the 1980s and 90s, West Oak Trails, Joshua Creek and Oakvillage from the 2000s on. Builder porches poured on unsettled backfill drop away from the house a decade later, and thin driveways crack through at the apron. Those are rebuilds, and we price them honestly instead of resurfacing over a gap that will open again.
Permits: Oakville is Halton Region, so Town of Oakville rules apply, not Toronto's. Like for like replacement in the same footprint usually needs nothing.
