What is a polished concrete basement floor?
A polished concrete basement floor is your existing basement slab, ground with diamond abrasives, chemically densified, and refined to a matte, satin or gloss finish. Nothing is laid on top, so there's no carpet to trap moisture, no laminate to lift after a leak, and no coating to peel. The densified, sealed surface resists mold and musty odours, reflects light so the room feels brighter, and works beautifully over in floor heating. It's one of the most practical floors for Toronto's older basements, provided the slab is sound enough to polish, which we test before we quote.

The basement floor that solves basement problems
Your basement is unlike any other room in the house. It deals with moisture, temperature swings and limited natural light, and traditional flooring like carpet, hardwood or laminate simply isn't built for those conditions. Polished concrete is.
Toronto basements naturally run humid. Polished concrete doesn't absorb moisture like carpet or warp like hardwood. The densified, sealed surface resists mold, mildew and musty odours, keeping the space healthy and fresh. And where other flooring gets replaced after a water incident, a polished basement floor just needs to be dried and cleaned.

The last row is the honest one. Polishing shows the slab's history, so filled cracks and patches remain visible. Will an old basement slab polish?
Many Toronto basements were poured decades ago as utility floors, not living space. Some polish beautifully. Some don't, and you should know which yours is before you spend. We test the slab first, and give you the answer in writing.

How we polish a basement floor
Assess and moisture test
Slab hardness, flatness, damage and moisture readings. The recommendation, polish or coat, goes in writing before any price.
Prepare and repair
Old flooring, adhesive and coatings removed, cracks and spalls filled, low spots addressed. Dust controlled with vacuum grinding.
Grind and densify
Progressively finer diamond passes set the look, then a chemical densifier hardens the surface and ends dusting for good.
Polish and guard
Refined to your chosen sheen and protected with a penetrating stain resistant guard. Ready to furnish.

Polished concrete basement floors: common questions
It's one of the best basement floors there is. It doesn't absorb moisture, doesn't harbour mould or allergens, reflects light so the space feels brighter, works over radiant heat, and has no coating or wear layer to replace. The one condition is that the slab has to be sound enough to polish, which we test before quoting.
About the same as tile. Concrete holds the temperature of the room, so a heated basement has a comfortable floor, and over in floor radiant heating it's the warmest surface you can choose. Area rugs add softness where you want it without giving up the benefits.
Yes. Cracks and spalls are repaired and filled before grinding, and the finished floor is sound and sealed. What you should know is that the repairs stay visible in a polished floor; they become part of the character. If you want a uniform look with nothing showing, a basement epoxy floor is the better choice, and we'll tell you.
Polished concrete handles normal basement humidity and surface dampness far better than any other flooring, and the densifier and guard reduce vapour coming through the slab. It is not a waterproofing system. If water is actively coming in, that has to be addressed first, and we can help sort that as part of the project.
It depends on the slab's condition, how much old flooring and adhesive has to come off, the area, and the sheen you choose. Prep is usually the biggest variable. We price after assessing, in writing, with options side by side and your price held for 21 days. Text three photos and most quotes come back within one business day.
Polish a sound slab, coat a damaged one. Polishing wins on longevity and maintenance because there's no layer to peel; epoxy and flake systems win where the slab is heavily patched, stained or you want a specific uniform colour. Most basements are two to four days including preparation, and you can walk on the floor once the guard has cured, usually the next day. Furniture goes back shortly after. Exact timing is in your quote.
