Concrete resurfacing is the process of applying a fresh polymer-modified layer directly over your existing concrete slab — eliminating cracks, staining, and surface deterioration without the cost or disruption of full removal. When done professionally with proper surface preparation, a resurfaced slab looks brand new and lasts 8–15 years.
It’s the smart alternative to replacement when your concrete is structurally sound but cosmetically damaged. Most resurfacing jobs are completed in one to two days with minimal disruption to your home.
Not sure if your concrete needs resurfacing or replacement? See our Concrete Repair Toronto page.

Great service!!Posted on Patty ColettaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Thank you TCR for a job well done. Nick and the guys did a fantastic job replacing our concrete driveway in Toronto. Highly recommend this company for any concrete work.Posted on Rick MachtingerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had a problem with our garage floor where it was cracked by the lip. Hubert came out to inspect the floor and gave me two options. The first was to just repair the lip and this would have been the less expensive option. The more expensive option was to replace the entire floor. When asking for his professional opinion, Hubert said it was my choice, but in his experience a cracked lip also meant there would be issues with the rest of the floor. I decided that we would replace the entire floor and I am glad I did. The problem when the garage floor was initially installed was that the concrete was poured over the rebar instead of the rebar being embedded in the concrete. I'm glad I listened to the professional as this would have been a headache in the future. The guys worked hard and clean up was good. Thanks again Hubert!Posted on Rebecca PotterTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Yes — concrete resurfacing is one of the most cost-effective ways to restore damaged or worn concrete without full replacement. It bonds a fresh layer over your existing slab, eliminating cracks, staining, and surface damage. For structurally sound concrete that looks old or worn, resurfacing delivers like-new results at 30-50% of the cost of replacement.
Professional concrete resurfacing typically lasts 8-15 years depending on the product used, surface preparation, and traffic levels. Decorative overlays and Graniflex coatings applied by Toronto Concrete Repairs come with a written warranty and are specifically formulated to withstand Toronto’s freeze-thaw cycles, which are the #1 cause of premature failure in resurfacing jobs.
No — pouring new concrete directly over cracked concrete is not recommended. Without proper bonding, the new layer will delaminate and the cracks will telegraph through within one to two seasons. The correct approach is professional concrete resurfacing using a polymer-modified overlay that bonds chemically to the existing slab, or full removal and replacement if the slab is structurally compromised.
The best resurfacing material depends on the application. For garage floors and pool decks, polyaspartic or Graniflex coatings offer superior durability and UV resistance. For driveways and patios, polymer-modified concrete overlays provide excellent bonding strength and can be stamped or textured. At Toronto Concrete Repairs we assess each surface and recommend the right product for your specific conditions and budget.
Concrete resurfacing refers to applying a thin layer of cementitious material over existing concrete to restore its surface. A concrete overlay is similar but typically thicker and can be decorative — stamped, coloured, or textured. Resurfacing is primarily functional, overlays are functional and aesthetic. Both bond to the existing slab and avoid the cost of full replacement.
With proper surface preparation and professional application, concrete resurfacing lasts 8-15 years on average. The two biggest factors affecting lifespan are preparation quality — grinding and cleaning the existing slab — and the grade of materials used. DIY resurfacing products from hardware stores typically last 2-5 years. Professional-grade systems applied by experienced contractors last significantly longer.
The main disadvantages are that overlays require a structurally sound base — they cannot fix underlying heaving, settling, or drainage problems. They also require professional surface preparation to bond properly. A poorly prepared surface will delaminate within one to two seasons. Finally, overlays add slight height to the surface which must be accounted for at doorways, drains, and transitions.
Yes — grinding is essential for a lasting bond. The existing concrete surface must be mechanically profiled using a diamond grinder to open the pores of the slab and remove any sealers, oils, or contaminants. Skipping this step is the #1 reason resurfacing jobs fail prematurely. At Toronto Concrete Repairs, proper surface preparation is non-negotiable on every job.
Concrete coating in Toronto typically ranges from $3 to $8 per square foot for epoxy systems and $6 to $12 per square foot for premium polyaspartic or Graniflex coatings. A standard two-car garage floor of 400 square feet runs approximately $1,500 to $4,000 depending on the coating system, surface condition, and any repairs required. Yes — a skim coat of polymer-modified concrete can be applied over old concrete to restore a smooth, fresh surface. The key requirement is proper surface preparation and the use of a bonding agent to ensure adhesion. Skim coats are typically 3-10mm thick and work best on surfaces that are structurally sound but cosmetically worn. They are not suitable for concrete with active cracks, heaving, or drainage issues.
